Water filter options for the home

Certain areas in South Africa continue to experience issues with contaminated water which pose a risk to households. While the Department of Water Affairs and Sanitation works on implementing clean-up programmes to the country’s water system, there are proactive ways that households can take to protect their families.

According to the Blue Drop Watch Report, the quality of our drinking water in our country keeps decreasing and the majority of our municipal water treatment systems are in dire conditions.

“Drinking water quality analyses indicate that 38% and 11% of systems achieve excellent and good microbiological quality respectively, while the balance of 51% has poor to bad microbiological water quality status.”

Water filtration systems are a great option for families looking to ensure their drinking water is clean and safe. These devices are designed to clean water of common pollutants such as bacteria, minerals and salts, chlorine, viruses, heavy metal, pesticides, and fluoride. Consumed in high levels, these pollutants can cause gastrointestinal illnesses, neurological damage, various cancers, skin irritations, reproductive issues and even death.

Water filtration systems come in many different forms, flow rates, technologies, longevity and price points. To help you understand the differences and choose the right system for your family and budget, we look at the various options.

Prevention is better than cure

Why do we need to filter our water? Our country’s’ wastewater treatment works  have been found to be lacking in many different areas leading to these contaminants reaching some homes.

If you’re considering a water filtration system for your home, here’s a few options for you:

  • Water filter jugs: This type of filter comes in different styles and sizes and is an easy, convenient and affordable option that improves the taste and quality of your water. It also includes an indicator that lets you know when to replace the water cartridge filter.
  • Tap filtration system: This system attaches to your tap and is easy to install. It filters the water as you open the tap and is very effective for preventing contaminants. You will need to replace the filter from time to time.
  • Countertop water filter: This filter is another basic and cost-effective solution for households. It includes a diverter valve that will be attached to the tap. During use you open the tap and pull the handle on the diverter valve and filtered water will come through the filter. Filters will also need to be replaced on a regular basis.
  • Under sink filters: This filter goes under the sink and is typically connected to the cold water pipe. The pipes and fittings that come with the filter are connected to the main supply and the cartridge, then run to and from the tap. The cartridge lasts for at least 8 000 litres. It uses reverse osmosis - a high quality water filtration process that has been known to remove at least 98% of toxins.
  • Whole house filters: This type of system is installed on the main water supply line to the home and needs to be installed by a registered plumber. This method ensures that all the water coming into the house is clarified at the point of entry. It is great for big families that use a lot of water daily and want to ensure their family's safety.
  • UV water purifiers: This uses ultraviolet light to only kill microorganisms that may be present in the water. However, it is best to use it in conjunction with another filter that will eliminate chemicals and toxins.

It is advisable to do your own research and find an expert on filtration to explain which system would best suit your budget and your family’s requirements.

Remember to choose a water filter and an expert installer that complies with the South African National Standards (SANS). The store or seller should be able to provide proof of this and enough information so you can make an informed decision. It is an extremely important aspect of buying your water filter as every filter needs to undergo numerous tests and performance standards to be effective.

There is no telling when the water issues in South Africa will be a thing of the past. When installed properly, water filters will successfully remove any harmful organisms and chemicals that can be found in tap water. By embracing any of the above solutions you will ensure the safety of your drinking water and your family’s health.
